In today’s modern society, the pace of life is very fast paced and the lifestyle itself is already very competitive. Hence, many working adults and students are overworked and have no time for relaxation. Therefore, it seems that having a care-free lifestyle is the ideal solution to live in this stressful era today. However, we should actually prepare ourselves for a better life, and furthermore, there are other ways to enjoy our life.

Being more carefree and having less worries can benefit many people today. Currently, in this competitive world, most people are caught in the rat race of trying to outwit one another to get the best qualification; parents nowadays are also overworked and have little or no time to spend with their children. Recently, a concerned Singaporean had also pointed out to the community through the media (the newspaper forum to be exact) that many students are overworked and have no play time, and this is a worrying trend. All this trends may lead to emotional breakdowns and already, teenage suicidal cases have increased in recent years. Hence, by enjoying life and having less worries, people will be able to relax and survive in the stressful world today.

However, being carefree and having the attitude of only living in the present is not a long-term solution to live a good life. People today must plan ahead and have goals in their lives. By knowing yourself better and having life goals, people can therefore lead more purposeful lives instead of waiting for things to happen. Successful people like Bill Gates of Microsoft Corporation have control over their lives by having goals and aspirations to make an impact on the world. To have the ability to set realistic goals, the person must know what his true strengths and weaknesses, and this can only be achieved when he gets himself involved in different activities to gain life experiences, instead of living your life with no direction and purpose.

There are many less fortunate people living in your community or another part of the world who requires extra help and concern from the fortunate ones. By helping the less fortunate people, we are actually enriching our lives. Leading a luxurious lifestyle is materialistic and only for self-pleasant and it is also a snobbish and self-centred attitude towards life. Some people living in the modern society have the courage and compassion to volunteer themselves in community projects, like helping out earthquake victims to rebuild their homes. By volunteering one’s time for community work or even a small amount of money as charity donation, we will feel more attached to the society we live in and lead a more enriching life.

We should contribute to the society we live in, merely because your society plays a big part in providing you with an education and a sense of belonging. By working hard to develop your career, your society benefits from it, especially in the economical aspect. It is also selfish to only want to lead lives in the present, as the future generation’s well-being is greatly dependable on the contributions of the current population on the society.

One of the best ways to live a better life is to enjoy it with your family and friends. The family unit is the most important component of one’s life ----- your family members, having biological links with one another, are your closest friends whom you can share your joy, anger and grief with. Secondly, your friends are also important in one’s life as they are usually the people whom you will seek support and advice from, when you are outside the boundaries of your family. Hence, we should be thankful that the people related to us have impacted our lives, and cherish the time we spend with them. Furthermore, leading a carefree life with no family members or friends around is a life that is dull and meaningless.

The destiny of our lives lies in our own hands ----- whether you want to be carefree and live in the present, or finding a more meaning life. I would choose a meaning life with goals and contributions to the less fortunate and society, and with my family and friends supporting me.
