I have changed a lot over the past 2 years in jc ----- physically (look healthier by putting on weight) but most importantly, character wise and my perceptions of the world I live in. I seem to have lost a great deal of my past cheerfulness and pride for the country. I feel that the time spent in jc was wasted and I should have pursued an IT course in a polytechnic which I have great interest in. The things I learnt in jc is outdated, not relevant to the real world and furthermore, rigid and stressful. Teachers in general are only concerned about students’ academic performances, and have not given enough or any attention to students’ aspirations, needs and problems. I feel that I have learnt more from my soccer training at NYJC, than in all the lectures and tutorials combined in the past 2 years. Frankly speaking, I dislike having 3 trainings in a week to prepare for the A Division tournament; I believe in training moderately and having adequate rest. I also regretted volunteering to be the goalkeeper in the college team, as I feel that I would have contributed more as a defender, a role which I play in Zelva and feel comfortable in. My coaches should have been more versatile and played me in both positions. I only played in the last group match of the A Division, after a disappointing and unlucky exit from the tournament. We had to win St Francis at NJC to save our pride. I was nervy in the first half, conceding a goal from Boon Huan’s deflation. Luckily, NYJC responded in the second half by scoring two goals to take the lead. I made an excellent and crucial save later. It was a one-on-one situation and the ball had bounced away from me towards goal. I made a daring save and won back the ball from the legs of the striker, who was just metres away from the goal. Although this is the only save I make in the entire match, it was a match decider and any slip from me would mean a defeat for my team. I had gained confidence, knowledge of the game and learnt the importance of teamwork after my soccer career at NYJC. My JC Life: Second Half in the next update… 5th October 04'
